Claire’s Nail Art

Vicki from Claires Accessories sent me some information about their new wave of nail art!

They have brought out nail wraps, bling nail stickers, new falsies with nail art and glitter polishes.

The nail wraps look like something that could be really interesting, theres multiple designs and my favourite is looking to be the peacock feather. Vicki has kindly given me some bits to try so I will be posting about these once I’ve tried them out!
The bling stickers look really interesting too, diamonds without the effort of sticking them all on separately!

So what do you think? Something you would try out?

Crackle and shatter, what’s the difference?

Crackle and shatter, what’s the difference?
Is there any difference?

Well, yes, in a sense. I’m going to put this as it would come out of my mouth;
Crackle: Stays as a piece, but has cracks apart.
Shatter: Separates into individual pieces.

If that makes no sense, I will show you with photo’s :)

20110904-104838.jpg

Here’s (from L to R) China Glaze: Lightning Bolt, Barry M: 316, MUA Nail Quake: Jailbreak, Barry M: 311, Beauty UK: Goth.

China Glaze: CRACKLE
MUA Nail Quake: CRACKLE
Barry M: SHATTER
Beauty UK: SHATTER

20110904-105513.jpg
Little Finger: CRACKLE, Ring Finger: SHATTER

20110904-105533.jpg
Middle Finger: CRACKLE, Index Finger: SHATTER

Quality and Performance:
Lightning Bolt is really opaque and thin.
Barry M 316 (White) is also opaque but very gloopy. (I added thinner)

Beauty UK has a OPI like brush, but is even more gloopy than Barry M.
MUA has a thin brush, and gives a really even application, this shatter seems very shiny and jelly like.
Barry M 311 (Black) is opaque, but is the same as the white in consistency.

Hope this clears up the Shatter/Crackle issue.
ps. many thanks to my mum for letting me use her as a hand model!

Aztec Nails Tutorial

I’ve had a nosey on the internet, and I can barely find any simple nail tutorials out there, I know that when I first got into nail art, these were what I wished was on the internet. Youtube provides some good ones, but there isn’t many on any blogs.
So i’ve decided to make my own series, starting with aztec. I’m going to be running this once a week, so if you have any suggestions, tweet me @paigemcdonagh, or email me at paigemcdonagh(at)yahoo(dot)com.
Aztec is one of the best nail art designs out there, firstly, its really on trend, clothing wise, and second, you can make mistakes, and cover them up as if they was meant to be there. I love aztec designs, they go with everything, and you can pretty much make them up as you go along.

Firstly, paint your nails with any base colour you fancy… I used Models Own: Concrete Mixer

20110903-104621.jpg

Then add a stripe anywhere you fancy of a contrasting colour. I choose Flourescent Orange. Give your contrasting colour a black outline, and add some black and white stripes. (wherever you want)

20110903-104713.jpg

Add some detailing, you can use a nail art pen, a paintbrush/nail art brush, a dotting tool, or even a toothpick! I used my nail art pens in black and white. Be creative, look around for inspiration. I will post some pictures and links at the end of this post, for some inspiration.

20110903-104943.jpg

20110903-105010.jpg

Now, add some dots! in black, or white, or any other colour you fancy!
Make this design fun!

20110903-105142.jpg

As bad of a photo that is, you can see I dotted around the cuticle line, and up to the free edge.
Add some topcoat, and your finito! ;)

This is just my take on Aztec nails, you could do something completely different. This is a great place to start as a beginner to nail art!

Effiesmakeupbox: did a lovely set of Aztec nails, she does awesome nails too, check her out :)

That’s me done for today…
Over+out!

Aztec Neon Nails!

I topped up my fake tan due to the crappy weather here in London. So to match my tan, I gave myself some neon nails!

This is infulenced by the infamous WAH designs.

I striped my 3 colours underneath with a white base underneath. I used Sinful Colors: Snow Me White, with Barry M: Yellow, Milani: Awesome Orange, Milani: Pink Hottie. I used a striper brush to stripe them on, the lines dont have to be very even, theyre mostly covered up anyway.

Then I used a black and white nail art pen to draw on the detail.

thank god for this little bit of colour in my life :)

Galaxy Nails.

This post shows how much better I’ve got at nail art in the past few months!

I haven’t been posting a lot recently, I’ve been using Tumblr. The group Polish-Aholics Anonymous on Facebook has got me back into blogging, along with some support from my boyfriend.

So the Monday Nail Art challenge on the group Polish-Aholics Anonymous theme this week was Galaxy nails. I did try these out a long time ago if you scroll back through my posts, and to be honest, when I look back now. It wasn’t very impressive!

Heres my attempt this time!!

I’m geniunley really proud of this. I love the ring finger, it looks so galaxy like! This did take me quite a while. I really would enlarge this picture just to show you the true beauty of the way the colours work together. I used a sponge to create my galaxies and a dotting tool for the stars. I found a really good way to use a sponge and have it small enough to create little splodges.

I ripped up a makeup sponge and placed it in a pair of tweezers, I then tied it up with a snag band. I saw this on a youtube video, but i cant remember which one!

List of polishes used: (it’s a long one!)

Base: Sinful Colors: Black on Black with Topshop NAILS: Gypsy Nights over the top.

Galaxies: Sinful Colors: Snow Me White, Barry M: Yellow, China Glaze: V, OPI: Color So Hot It Berns, China Glaze: Frostbite, American Apparel: Neon Coral.

Topcoats: China Glaze: Golden Enchantement with 2 coats of Seche Vite.

Give galaxy nails a go!

minnie mouse(esque) nails

I made these partly for my birthday, but then Danny offered to paint my nails as he was taking me to dinner, he never followed up with the offer, but he did buy me 4 topshop nail polishes, so I kind of forgave him! I used ‘Misfit’ on my birthday (Wednesday) which he brought me, I’ll blog about that tomorrow, and all the other colours!
I also got 4 opi’s and a mini set of nails inc ones :) and teeny tiny nail art brushes which got delivered today! :)

I was going to do this matte, but on consultation of my mum, she said to slap on the seche vite!

I think it looks quite cute :’)
I used..
black; barry m-black
red; opi-color so hot it berns
white; mac vestral white

ombre manicure (sort of)

i kind of added my own twist to the ombre manicure, and made the colour difference a lot more obvious, instead of keeping the shades really close to each other.

please excuse the disgraceful cuticles, and the seche vite shrinkage.

ive seen something like this before, but using other colours, and stripes instead of dots.

the dots went a little bit dodgy because i was really shaky that night for some reason.

i actually picked out loads of different colours for this but i settled with blue in the end.

i used:

thumb: mac vestral white. (dots are polishes as follows)

index: barry m blueberry ice cream

middle: topshop the big easy

ring: a barry m colour, think its colbat blue?

little: nails inc denim.

purple+pink mix up.

i didnt have much time, and ive been wanting to use these sorts of colours together for ages!

i really like how these turned out, and excuse the smudge on the index finger, i did these just before bed…

i used:…

thumb: china glaze; flying dragon with andrea fullerton gemstone overcoat. (which i hear is a dupe for nubar 2010, sally hansen hidden treasure, and gosh rainbow.)

index: eyeko lilac polish.

middle: barry m indigo as a base, with models own disco mix over the top.

ring: models own pastel pink, with mac vestral white for the dots, using a dotting tool.

little: barry m flamingo pink.

everything topped with 1 coat of seche vite, 2 on the disco mix because its a bit gritty.

a galaxy far far away.

i couldn’t think of any other title by the way. :$
i’ve adored people that do ‘galaxy’ nails before, but i’ve been to scared to try myself because it looks so difficult!
i grew a pair, and tried it, and its so easy, it took me like 5 minutes, its taken me longer to do this blogpost!

first, you need a black base, one with a slight shimmer/glitter preferably. it adds more depth to the whole design. i used cosmic from eyeko.

next you need to find a tool to ‘sponge’ with, i used a makeup sponge, but i guess you can use tissue or something like that? you then need a holographic polish of any colour, i usedholographic from gosh. you need to sponge it, anywhere on the nail, but not covering it, so like, up one side, in a diagonal across the nail, a tip. differ it on each nail for a different effect.
you then need a sheer polish, a colour like, purple, navy, medium blue, pinky. i used a sheer duochrome from maxfactor called sunny pink. you need to sponge this on in the same way as above, you can go over the holographic, because its sheer, it just adds to the effect.
now, do the same thing, but with another sheer polish, this part is optional, you can leave it how it is if thats the desired look, and skip to the next step. i sponged on dazzling blue from maxfactor, i sponged it in the same way, i basically just filled in gaps that i thought would need filling in.
lastly i added a glitter topcoat over, i think flakies could look quite nice instead of glitter aswell, because you cant really see it that much, but it adds a slight look in different lights. i used twinkle by elf.
to finish i added some rhinestones, and a coat of seche vite to make it extra shiny, and the rhinestones to stay :)
ill definately be doing this again, maybe with some more colours to add some more depth.
ps, excuse the cuticles, i’ve just slapped loads of lemony flutter on, i think its all the writing+revision i’ve been doing :)

little bitt’a leopard.

i couldn’t think of much more to do, and considering i have a ton of revising to do i wanted something i could do quick that was easy.
i have exams on wednesday+thursday, so im gonna be slacking behind i think!
i used my new elf polishes i got aswell!
amazing as always!!

i think the colour combination is really sweet. i didnt think it would go at all, but the blue makes the nude really pop.
i used elf-innocence, but based it with elf-white, because innocent is so sheer it would have took a good 6 coats, and i couldnt be bothered to wait that long! so in the end i did 1 coat white, and 2+a bit innocence!
i used barry m-cyan blue for the splodges, and barry m-black for the outside bits,
all with a thin nail art brush

im off to revise-boreeeeeeeee.
