Crackle and shatter, what’s the difference?

Crackle and shatter, what’s the difference?
Is there any difference?

Well, yes, in a sense. I’m going to put this as it would come out of my mouth;
Crackle: Stays as a piece, but has cracks apart.
Shatter: Separates into individual pieces.

If that makes no sense, I will show you with photo’s :)

Here’s (from L to R) China Glaze: Lightning Bolt, Barry M: 316, MUA Nail Quake: Jailbreak, Barry M: 311, Beauty UK: Goth.

China Glaze: CRACKLE
MUA Nail Quake: CRACKLE
Barry M: SHATTER
Beauty UK: SHATTER

Little Finger: CRACKLE, Ring Finger: SHATTER

Middle Finger: CRACKLE, Index Finger: SHATTER

Quality and Performance:
Lightning Bolt is really opaque and thin.
Barry M 316 (White) is also opaque but very gloopy. (I added thinner)

Beauty UK has a OPI like brush, but is even more gloopy than Barry M.
MUA has a thin brush, and gives a really even application, this shatter seems very shiny and jelly like.
Barry M 311 (Black) is opaque, but is the same as the white in consistency.

Hope this clears up the Shatter/Crackle issue.
ps. many thanks to my mum for letting me use her as a hand model!

Aztec Nails Tutorial

I’ve had a nosey on the internet, and I can barely find any simple nail tutorials out there, I know that when I first got into nail art, these were what I wished was on the internet. Youtube provides some good ones, but there isn’t many on any blogs.
So i’ve decided to make my own series, starting with aztec. I’m going to be running this once a week, so if you have any suggestions, tweet me @paigemcdonagh, or email me at paigemcdonagh(at)yahoo(dot)com.
Aztec is one of the best nail art designs out there, firstly, its really on trend, clothing wise, and second, you can make mistakes, and cover them up as if they was meant to be there. I love aztec designs, they go with everything, and you can pretty much make them up as you go along.

Firstly, paint your nails with any base colour you fancy… I used Models Own: Concrete Mixer

Then add a stripe anywhere you fancy of a contrasting colour. I choose Flourescent Orange. Give your contrasting colour a black outline, and add some black and white stripes. (wherever you want)

Add some detailing, you can use a nail art pen, a paintbrush/nail art brush, a dotting tool, or even a toothpick! I used my nail art pens in black and white. Be creative, look around for inspiration. I will post some pictures and links at the end of this post, for some inspiration.

Now, add some dots! in black, or white, or any other colour you fancy!
Make this design fun!

As bad of a photo that is, you can see I dotted around the cuticle line, and up to the free edge.
Add some topcoat, and your finito! ;)

This is just my take on Aztec nails, you could do something completely different. This is a great place to start as a beginner to nail art!

That’s me done for today…
Over+out!

Galaxy Nails.

This post shows how much better I’ve got at nail art in the past few months!

I haven’t been posting a lot recently, I’ve been using Tumblr. The group Polish-Aholics Anonymous on Facebook has got me back into blogging, along with some support from my boyfriend.

So the Monday Nail Art challenge on the group Polish-Aholics Anonymous theme this week was Galaxy nails. I did try these out a long time ago if you scroll back through my posts, and to be honest, when I look back now. It wasn’t very impressive!

Heres my attempt this time!!

I’m geniunley really proud of this. I love the ring finger, it looks so galaxy like! This did take me quite a while. I really would enlarge this picture just to show you the true beauty of the way the colours work together. I used a sponge to create my galaxies and a dotting tool for the stars. I found a really good way to use a sponge and have it small enough to create little splodges.

I ripped up a makeup sponge and placed it in a pair of tweezers, I then tied it up with a snag band. I saw this on a youtube video, but i cant remember which one!

List of polishes used: (it’s a long one!)

Base: Sinful Colors: Black on Black with Topshop NAILS: Gypsy Nights over the top.

Galaxies: Sinful Colors: Snow Me White, Barry M: Yellow, China Glaze: V, OPI: Color So Hot It Berns, China Glaze: Frostbite, American Apparel: Neon Coral.

Topcoats: China Glaze: Golden Enchantement with 2 coats of Seche Vite.

Give galaxy nails a go!
